The tradition of matcha preparation: simplicity meets tradition

Matcha, the fine green tea from Japan, has gained popularity worldwide in recent years. Known for its bright green color and unique flavor, matcha is not only a delight for the senses, but also a symbol of Japanese tea ceremony and culture. Many people think that preparing matcha is complicated and time-consuming, but the opposite is the case. With a few simple steps, you can prepare matcha in the traditional way and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Japanese tea culture.

The basics of traditional matcha preparation

Matcha is traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, a ritual known for its meditative and spiritual qualities. Although the ceremony itself can be complex, the basic preparation of matcha is relatively simple and can be easily incorporated into everyday life.

1. Choosing the Matcha

The first step is choosing the right matcha. For traditional preparation, it is important to choose high-quality organic matcha made from the best tea leaves. Our three main varieties are Daily Matcha, Premium Matcha and Ceremonial Matcha, each matcha powder ideal for traditional matcha. For an authentic experience, we recommend Ceremonial Matcha, which offers a fine, creamy texture and a rich flavor.

2. The necessary utensils

For the traditional Matcha preparation you only need a few special utensils:
- Chawan (Matcha bowl): A bowl in which the Matcha is prepared and enjoyed.
- Chasen (whisk): A traditional bamboo whisk used to beat the matcha and create a foamy consistency.

Optionally:
- Chashaku (teaspoon): A special bamboo spoon for weighing the matcha.

3. Preparation

The preparation of matcha follows a simple but elegant process:

1. Heat the water: Heat fresh water to about 80°C (not boiling), as boiling water can affect the delicate taste of the matcha.

2. Sift the matcha powder: Sift about 1 to 2 grams (1 to 2 chashaku spoons) of matcha powder into the tea bowl to avoid lumps and ensure an even texture.

3. Add water: Pour about 70 to 100 ml of hot water over the matcha powder.

4. Beat the matcha: Use the chasen to beat the matcha in a quick “W” motion. This creates a foamy layer on the surface of the tea and ensures an even distribution of the powder.

5. Enjoy the tea: Your matcha is now ready. Drink it straight from the tea bowl and enjoy the rich taste and deep green color.

The enjoyment of Matcha

Making matcha the traditional way is not only easy, but also a little break from everyday life. The process can be meditative and help you find a moment of peace and reflection. The freshly prepared matcha not only offers a unique taste, but also health benefits such as a high concentration of antioxidants and a gentle energy boost.

The traditional preparation of matcha may seem complicated at first glance, but it is actually uncomplicated and enriching. With a little practice and the right utensils, you can master the art of matcha preparation and experience a piece of Japanese culture in your everyday life. Whether for a relaxing break or as a celebratory moment - matcha is a pleasure that you can easily bring to its traditional form.
